Thanks for giving us some of your time, Jon. Congratulations on the movie. How are you?
I’m a little lost walking through London.
I always get lost in London.
But I live here.
So this book is… all true?
All of the craziest stuff about generals trying to walk through walls is true.
You actually talked to people involved in the program you wrote about?
I interviewed Uri Geller [a famous UK psychic] after 9/11. He claimed the CIA had tested him. He told me “I have been reactivated.” Then he said “If you repeat what I tell you, I will deny it.” I also interviewed a soldier who had been in something called Project Jedi. I asked what happened in Project Jedi. He told me that level one was eating nuts and grains for a month. The second level was invisibility.
Turning invisible?
Yes. But then that was downgraded to just not being seen. The third level was walking up to a fork in the road and deciding whether to go left or right. The fourth level: kill a goat just by staring at it.
What’s it like to interview intelligence community types?
Oh, they’re lovely. I never look down on them. When I’m with people in a bubble of madness, I feel very happy to have found them.
Did you ever feel in danger when you were with them?
I didn’t. Most of these guys in “The Men Who Stare At Goats” are good-hearted hippies who wanted to change the world.
Is the CIA crazy?
There are elements of crazy. And nutty people can briefly influence the CIA. But we’re all completely nuts. I’ve had terrible fights with my neighbors.
Do you believe in the paranormal?
No. I believe they do. I’m not a believer. I’m a boring skeptic.
Hope you find your way home.
